AUBURN Building leadership

AUBURN Building leadership By Alyssa Sunkin / The Citizen Thursday, April 2, 2009 11:33 PM EDT
AUBURN - For Pat Carroll, fostering leadership skills is as much about building personal character as it is becoming a positive influence on others.

Sam Tenney / The Citizen Tenth-graders from the Cayuga-Onondaga Board of Cooperative nine component school districts listen to Las Vegas-based motivational speaker Carl Latting at Cayuga Community College. Mr. Latting's address was part of Jump Start 10: A Youth Leadership Summit, a program aimed at instilling leadership skills in high school sophomores.

Last week, the 16-year-old from the Union Springs Central School District got the best of both worlds as he and about 250 of his fellow high school sophomores in each of the Cayuga-Onondaga Board of Cooperative Educational Services nine component school districts converged at Cayuga Community College for a summit on leadership.  Jump Start 10: A Youth Leadership Summit took hold of CCC last Friday with the mission of getting 10th graders to start thinking about their futures while learning about how to use leadership skills to influence the lives of others.

Why I'm Passionate

In 2005, I opened a small Employee Development company designed to assist businesses with getting the most out of their employees. The managers would consistently ask me: “Why don’t they teach this stuff in college!” The stuff they were referring to is Leadership Development, Diversity, Conflict Resolution, Time Management, Workplace Social Skills, and overall Employability Skills!

After all the reason for going to college anyway was to gain the education and understanding that would allow us to have a more promising, and fulfilling employment and financial future.

Unfortunately, most college grads missed class the day these concepts were being taught, and they may pay with their jobs if they don’t learn them quickly!
